New data released by the Revenue Mobilization, Allocation, and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) has shed light on the significant sums allocated as estacode for political, public, and judicial office holders in Nigeria.
According to the data, these officials receive a combined sum of $24,385 for every night spent during official travels. The Chief Justice of Nigeria receives the highest pay, with an estacode of $2,000 per night, followed by the Justice of the Supreme Court, the President of the Appeal Court, and the Senate President, each receiving $1,300.
While providing insight into the remuneration package, the RMAFC highlighted concerns regarding its abuse by stakeholders at various levels of government. This abuse has led to criticism of the commission for fixing high amounts for allowances.
The commission emphasized its efforts to clarify the matter through media engagements, stating that the perception of jumbo pay for office holders persists despite these clarifications.
Estacode, a term used in government for international travel allowances, refers to the daily stipend provided to officials traveling outside their usual work location.
With the recent ban on government-sponsored official travels, the Federal Government demonstrates its commitment to both monetary tightening and fiscal management. This move reflects a broader effort to ensure responsible financial stewardship amidst economic challenges.
The release of this data prompts discussions on transparency and accountability in public sector spending, highlighting the need for prudent financial management practices.
